According to bestitude, US 95 is a US Highway in the US state of Oregon. The road forms a north-south route through the extreme southeast of the state, from the Nevada border to the Idaho border. US 95 is 193 kilometers long in Oregon.

Travel directions

US 95 goes through extremely remote territory and there are only a few hamlets on the nearly 200 miles through Oregon. One crosses only one other paved road along the way, State Route 78, which gives access to the rest of Oregon. US 95 is of virtually no importance to the state of Oregon. The route leads through mountains, steppe and desert. The route passes over the Blue Mountain Pass, which is 1,613 meters high. The entire route is single lane.

History

US 95 was created in 1926 but ran only in Idaho at the time. The road didn’t exist in Oregon at the time. In 1938, the route was extended south from Fruitland into California and passed through the state of Oregon. At the time, US 95 was still a poorly accessible road, partly not even an improved gravel road. The road was asphalted in the period 1940-1944. However, many other upgrades have not been made to the road.

Traffic intensities

1,200 to 1,400 vehicles drive daily on US 95. Relatively many, but that’s mainly because it’s the only paved road in the region.

Oregon History

Indigenous History

According to biotionary, Oregon has been inhabited by humans for about 15,000. Still, the first records of people in the region date back to the 16th century. Oregon was home to several indigenous peoples, such as the Chasta, the Chinook, and the Molalla. Some of these peoples are also known for making totem poles, on which the Thunderbird was depicted. The first European to visit the region was Spaniard Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1543. Later, several Englishmen searched the area. Although the Spaniards had claimed the area, the area was of no interest to them. After all, the Spaniards had a large colonial empire in Central and South America. The English did not have this and wanted to use the area for hunting animals for their fur. In the end, the Spaniards gave up their claim.

Oregon Territory

After American Independence and the War of 1812, the British and Americans shared Oregon territory together. This ran from Oregon to Wyoming to northern Canada. Both the British and the Americans were allowed to use the area for hunting, trading and living. The Oregon Trail caused many Americans to move to the area. President James Knox Polk eventually caused the territory to be divided between the British and the Americans by crossing the straight border into Canada. In the period after this, the Oregon territory was divided into smaller territories, from which the state of Oregon was also created. As a territory, Oregon banned slavery as early as 1844. In the years that followed, the territory’s population increased, making it eligible to become a state.

Oregon as a state

Oregon was admitted as the 33rd state on February 14, 1859, shortly before the American Civil War. By the way, it wasn’t until March 15, 1859 that Oregon residents knew that Oregon had become a state. In the following period, the population of the state increased. They mainly came to Oregon for logging, hunting, farming and fishing. Oregon became one of the first states to introduce the referendum in 1902. On May 5, 1945, a Japanese bombing raid took place in Oregon, killing six residents. In the 1930s, much industry came to the state and many dams were built to generate electricity. Oregon became the first state in 1972 to introduce a deposit to reduce litter. In 1994 euthanasia became legal in the state and in 2014 marijuana also became legal in the state.
