It is bordered by North Dakota to the north, Minnesota to the east, Iowa to the southeast and Wyoming and Montana to the west. The capital of South Dakota is Pierre and its largest city is Sioux Falls with a population of nearly 180,000. South Dakota has a long and rich history that dates back to its founding in 1889 when it became one of the last states to be admitted into the Union. The economy of South Dakota is largely driven by agriculture with crops such as wheat, corn, soybeans and sunflowers being some of its main exports due to its abundance in natural resources such as fresh water which provides jobs for many farmers throughout the state. Tourism also plays an important role in South Dakota’s economy with attractions such as Mount Rushmore National Memorial attracting millions of visitors every year. In addition there are several professional sports teams located throughout the state providing entertainment for locals and tourists alike throughout the year! The most dominant vegetation type is grassland which covers over 60% of the state and consists mainly of blue grama, little bluestem and western wheatgrass. These grasslands often form dense prairies which provide important habitat for many species of wildlife. In addition to grasslands there are also areas of mixed-conifer forest dominated by ponderosa pine and Douglas fir as well as dry oak woodlands which contain bur oak and chinkapin oak. Along the Missouri River one can find riparian forests consisting mainly of cottonwood, boxelder and silver maple as well as sand dune habitats containing beach heather and seaside goldenrod. In eastern South Dakota there are grasslands which include little bluestem, indiangrass, switchgrass and big bluestem in addition to the Kentucky bluegrass found in lowland meadows. There are also areas of wetland such as marshes, bogs and swamps that contain various species of sedges, rushes, grasses and wildflowers. Many varieties of wildflowers bloom throughout South Dakota including lupines, columbines, black-eyed susans and phloxes which provide essential food sources for pollinators like bees and butterflies. In addition to these native plants one can also find a variety of exotic plants such as Japanese honeysuckle, kudzu vines and Chinese privet which have become invasive in many parts of the state.
