Jewellery and Social Rank

In hierarchical societies have often been using precious metals and gemstones in the manufacture of jewelry and thus marked a social rank and status. Early jewelry findings, metal originate from Egypt, where you already ca. 4000 f.Kr. used gold and copper into necklaces and bangles or bracelets which were the preferred jewellery types for both sexes. In the modern Western world, especially youth from the mid-1960s used new and non-traditional jewelry forms, often inspired by foreign cultures, jewellery art.

Jewelry often is considered to be finer, the more expensive they are. Why have jewelry also traditionally been used as a way to showcase wealth on. Also has jewelry also been an expression of power; the one who had the nicest Crown, or whose wife wore the most expensive jewelry, might be the most important man. Most kingdoms have a collection of Crown jewels, which is only used on special occasions. Historically, they have also served as a symbol of power and rule of the Royal family.

Jewellery and Social Rank

As long as precious metals and gemstones have been used to create jewelry, they have existed as a sign of wealth. While many kinds of jewelry have their roots in function, pins, buckles and brooches was originally created to serve a particular function, but later evolved to more decorative usage thing and eventually seen as ornaments and jewellery.

Traditionally, jewelry has been worn by women mainly, and only to a lesser extent by men. In later European history has the only accepted jewelry for men been cufflinks, a tie pin and engagement/wedding ring. Today is a (simple) necklace or earrings in one ear, however, also accepted, although it’s still not considered befitting by finer apartments. In some African tribes have jewelry, however, traditionally been worn by both men and women.

Described by Bridgat.com, the rising prosperity of the population from the 17th century and relatively relaxed social attitudes meant that gold and silver jewelry which was usually reserved for the rich and powerful could now be used by the lower classes.

Around the time of the Victorian era (1837-1901), was created in order to mass produce jewelry manufacturing operations. It was a large and significant change, since it meant that the jewelry could be produced at a much lower price, and thus make it available to the entire population.

Jewelry began to develop in many styles and this trend continued until the beginning of the 20th century. century and has evolved with the manufacturing technique to include intricate glass creations. The industrial revolution introduced an unprecedented change in the world, and jewellery fashion and trends changed faster than ever before.
