Clearaudio Concept Turntable + Concept

The Clearaudio concept (1000 Euro) with more stability and geschmeidigerer fine resolution, countered the deeper bass and minimal more agile appearance of the Pro-Ject Xperience (12/06).

That Clearaudio consistently relies on the idea of the system and wants to sweeten the purchase above all also very benighted turntable customers, shows during the unpacking of the beautiful building haeuslerisch acting concepts. The analog newcomer must not even adjust the tracking force, because ships the tonearm with counterweight is adjusted.

This is possible because the tone arm has a magnetic bearing that suffers even during transportation do not, that it must carry a counterweight. But that was not the main reason for this rare solution. Rather, the friction and low noise level of such a bearing construction drove the Erlanger. While the arm between two magnets are drawn on floats, while a string – made possible by their twisting an anti-skating – fixed the basic position. Probably confusion with the insiders to avoid known Schroder tonearm, the responsible Patrick Suchy camp turned around and positioned the magnets are drawn to at the top.

To overcome the force of gravity, accordingly strong magnets must be used, which ultimately leads to a dependency on the force of the vertical arm position. Because according to the angle in which are the magnets to each other, their attraction is changed and thus the tracking force. This varies depending on the record thickness to around 3 Millinewton (and reverse corrugated LPs anymore). Thus the pickup should not too sensitive to changes the force.

When wiring, Clearaudio proceeded very consistently because of the gold-plated pickup connectors a continuous cable leads up to the RCA plugs.

Useful there also in the drive to discover. It has a multiple-layer base plate with a core made of medium-density fibreboard with a fairly massive aluminium rim; on the top is a slab of a dirt-repellent and scratch-resistant plastic. All of this is connected with a tenacious adhesive, which should lead to good resonance in combination with material mix.

The stock is very solid with its stainless-steel axle, which turns into a bronze bushing on a Teflon mirror. A DC electric motor does the drive of the small plastic inner plate, lies the main platter, via a flat belt. It sits in a rubber damper, which stops vibration in chess.

The DC motor is also the basis on which that can be changed with simple electronic means, say about the input voltage, the speed. This uses Clearaudio, easily switch to make selectable three turn tempi – what will require fans of Schell varnish plates, the 78 revolutions per minute, very happy.

A three centimeter-thick copy of Polyoxymethylenes (POM) serves the concept as a plate. Stainless steel spikes, which are sit in threads, allowing so a height adjustment, complete the picture of the concept. What was not to be expected if the price: the concept is completely manufactured in Germany.

The structure in the listening room was quickly whether the complete before adjustment, because the tester only had to juggle the concept, to indulge the first powerful and yet delicate tones. So, he distanced the stereoplay highlight Rega P1 with Ortofon OM 5 E through better articulation of voices and more generous room playback immediately. Thus, he played at a level similar to a Pro-Ject Xperience comfort with the Blue Note N ° 2 (12/06). The concept with more stability for loud orchestral inserts and Smoother fine resolution, countered the deeper bass and minimal more agile appearance of the Pro Ject.

That the concept as almost maxed out package occurred the passage with a Benz ACE H 2 (10/05) or even the reference scanner showed Lyra Titan i (6/06). Because even with the top system was only a low resolution benefit to hear. On the other hand the concept pickup presented itself (the solo with 150 euro to beech suggests) in the reference turntable Linn LP 12 SE radical (6/09) although very harmoniously, unraveled complex passages but not quite as well as his brother Clearaudio Alpha wood (4/02).
