Bahamas Energy and Environment Facts

Natural resources and energy

The Bahamas are scarce for natural resources, but those extracted - salt and lime mineral aragonite - are important export products. Water scarcity prevails, as there is only a thin layer of groundwater and not any lakes, rivers or streams.

The energy is mainly generated by oil and natural gas imported from Venezuela and Mexico. There are hopes of finding oil and gas in their own waters and some exploration is planned. However, the resistance is relatively widespread as many fear that oil drilling poses a threat to the environment and thus also to the important tourism industry.
